How to choose the best location tool for the job

  • Choose by what’s below

A cable signal and a buried marker call for different tools. Start with what the crew needs to find.

  • Choose by the locating task

An area check, a route trace and a cable fault each ask a different question. Choose the kit that can answer yours.

  • Choose the detail you need to keep

Depth estimates help assess a detected line. Usage logs help review the work. Choose the model for the detail you need.

Choose by what’s below

For pipes and cables with a suitable conductive path, choose electromagnetic locating. A compatible transmitter adds a signal for the receiver to follow when existing Power or Radio signals are absent.

For installed EMS tape, rope or electronic markers, consider 3M Dynatel 7420. It follows compatible markers without connecting a separate transmitter to the route. Choose 7550-iD when the job needs both line tracing and EMS locating.

Confirm marker frequency and generation. Bare plastic pipe needs a suitable tracer wire, marker system or sonde; a line locator cannot trace the plastic itself.

Choose by the locating task

For everyday checks before excavation, pair C.A.T4 with Genny4. Avoidance Mode checks Power, Radio and Genny signals together. Genny4 adds a signal to trace and helps find small cables such as telecoms and street lighting.

For more detailed line tracing, compare precision locating options. Tapex lists the utility-focused RD7000+ and multifunction RD8000 ranges; confirm remaining stock and service support for these discontinued models.

For locating cable sheath faults to earth as well as lines and EMS markers, consider 3M Dynatel 7573-iD. Confirm the compatible transmitter, Earth Contact Frame and connection leads in the kit.

Choose the detail you need to keep

Choose C.A.T4+ for depth estimation in Genny mode; standard C.A.T4 does not provide it. Marker depth from an EMS locator describes the marker’s position, which can differ from the pipe below.

For fleet review, eC.A.T4 records tool use and gC.A.T4 adds GPS position. Tapex lists both models; confirm the exact variant, current supply and software support. Depth requires a + variant in these C.A.T4 families.

For details attached to a buried asset, the listed 3M Dynatel models read and write compatible iD markers. Their mapping workflows require compatible external GPS/GIS equipment. Usage logs record how a tool was used; they do not prove every service was found.
